Tell us about yourself: I’m a lucky husband to Amy and parents to Milo and Clara. My side hustle is CEO and co-founder of Monitaur, an AI governance company helping insurance companies and vendors to build, manage, and automate AI governance programs. We live in Massachusetts.
Tell us about your involvement with IRES: I’ve tried to be a helpful thought partner to the NAIC and departments of insurance since 2019 as our whole industry develops a perspective on AI risks and governance. Through those interactions and a few of our customers, I learned about IRES. That has grown into the privilege of serving on the board of the IRES Foundation and delivering education at CDS.
Tell us why you find involvement with IRES to be valuable: I genuinely believe that the community and education IRES and the IRES Foundation brings to our industry is as meaningful as any. Insurance regulation doesn’t work without strong communication and partnership between industry compliance leaders and regulators responsible for market conduct and examination. I’ve learned a tremendous amount that helps Monitaur deliver solutions that help these stakeholders.
Do you have any wise words/tips for new IRES members or those who are new to insurance regulation: Engage with the community and ask questions. Attending events and spending time with experienced leaders is a great hack to speed up your knowledge and preparedness. But also, don’t be shy to ask “why?”! One of the greatest assets of being new is the potential to see things differently, and understanding “why” might create opportunities for you to identify new ways of getting work done.
When you are not working, what are your passions/hobbies: I’m a 10-year rider in the Pan-Mass Challenge that raises money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I started a team of riders and fundraisers, FunkYouCancer, that has raised over $1M for cancer research and patient care.
